Nano Valverde is a Chilean-born musician and composer whose work spans decades and continents. His musical journey began in the mid-1970s, performing at weekly solidarity events organized by Chilean exiles in Toronto. These early experiences laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to music as both an art form and a tool for expression and resistance.

Trained in classical guitar, Nano pursued formal studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music and later specialized in composition at York University. Over the years, he has composed and performed music for a wide range of interdisciplinary projects, collaborating with dancers, filmmakers, theatre artists, and visual storytellers.

His work includes The Jaguar Project with choreographer Alejandro Roncería; the soundscape for Rivers of Blood Flows On; original music for the theatre piece Veins of Copper; and the score for the documentary War Is Not a Game. He composed for Deepti Gupta’s dance work Quanta, which premiered at the National Gallery of Canada and toured to New York and Banff. His score for the feature film Johnny Greyeyes was featured at the Sundance Film Festival. Other notable projects include Tobacco Ties for the World Indigenous Dance Festival and sound design for Carmen Aguirre’s play Refugee Hotel.

Nano is the founder of Ayekan Ensemble, where he created Reading Galeano, a multimedia performance inspired by the powerful texts of Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano. He also composed Agua/Water, a multidisciplinary piece exploring environmental themes through layered sound and imagery.

Today, Nano continues to collaborate with musicians, artists, and choreographers, exploring sound textures through a unique blend of acoustic and electronic elements. His work invites listeners into a rich sonic landscape rooted in cultural memory, political awareness, and artistic innovation.
